The Montessori School of Tokyo (MST) is seeking a full-time guide to work in our Elementary (EL) programme no later than August 2023. The ideal candidate will be a masterful, thoughtful, and compassionate Montessori educator who supports and nurtures the social/emotional development of the students in their care. They are an enlightened generalist who inspires the children to explore all areas of the curriculum.

Primary Role
To work as a teacher who ignites the spark of interest in each individual child and supports them in their developmental needs.

Responsibilities
-Maintain a safe physical and emotional environment which encourages respect and understanding between students and faculty in the Elementary community and is consistent with Montessori pedagogy.
-Maintain and protect the three-hour work period each morning.
-Plan and deliver presentations to students on a regular basis.
-Observe students on a regular basis.
-Help students to concentrate and find joy in their work.
-Ensure the environment is clean, beautiful, orderly, and prepared for students at all times.
-Make materials as needed.
-Help students to navigate peer conflict.
-Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, and faculty.
-Provide feedback about student progress to parents that includes, but is not limited to, twice yearly progress reports and learning conferences, as well as impromptu parent meetings when needed.
-Work collaboratively with colleagues, teaching partners, assistants and others within the Elementary teaching team.
-Attend school community events such as Back to School events, Montessori Journey, other parent ed offerings, etc.
-Ensure that Transparent Classroom and other tools are up to date and lessons are recorded on a regular basis.
-Post content on the appropriate social media channels to support wider understanding of MST’s elementary programme.
-Other duties (determined by school administration) that support school operations such as screening of new students, garden or recess duty, street duty, field trip chaperone or special event attendance.
-Plan, attend, support, and participate in Elementary trips e.g. Elementary Camp, Upper Elementary Ski Trip (if applicable, etc.)

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

Essential:
-Bachelor’s degree or higher
-AMI 6-12 Diploma or currently enrolled in/willing to complete an AMI 6-12 Diploma
-Native English speaker OR fluent and highly proficient in English, both written and spoken
-Excellent cross-cultural communication, interpersonal, organisational, and problem-solving skills
-Works calmly and effectively under pressure
-Communicates appropriately, collaboratively, and respectfully with students, parents, and colleagues
-Self-motivated and proactive
-Willingness to work for at least 3 years at MST
-Ability to adapt to living in a Japanese environment

Desirable:
-3 years experience as a guide in a Montessori 6-12 programme
Experience living abroad or significant experience with a culture other than one’s own
