Elementary Assistants Course

The Washington Montessori Institute will offer an elementary assistants course from July 12-16, 2010. The purpose of this course is to help interested adults become assistants in a Montessori elementary class. The work of an assistant is to support the work of the teacher/guide. Course emphasis is on the theory that guides the adults in their work with children. The course is also very helpful for parents, Montessori school heads not holding Montessori diplomas, and others working in a Montessori school setting.

Course Director Kay Baker

is the AMI Director of Elementary training at WMI @ Loyola University MD. She has over 37 years experience as a Montessori teacher and trainer. Kay serves on the Editorial Board of AMI Communications and on the AMI/USA Committee for Consultant Training.

Course Components

The course includes the theory involving observation, intervention and non-intervention, how to help children develop from their own initiative, freedom and its development, responsibility and its development, role of the adult, and work of the child. Pertinent readings from Maria Montessori's writings are examined and discussed.

Schedule

The course will meet daily from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm from July 12-16, 2010.

Requirements for Completion

Full attendance.
Two short essays on the theory.

Tuition

$350.
A nonrefundable deposit of $50 is due with registration (by June 1). The tuition balance is due in full by July 1.

Readings will be taken from the following books by Maria Montessori.

They are available from several sources, including Nienhuis Montessori/USA.
