“When the child goes out, it is the world itself that opens to him. Let us take the child out to show him real things instead of making objects which represent ideas and closing them in cupboards.”
~Maria Montessori

THE ART OF INSPIRING ART with Phyllis Pottish-Lewis

To inspire, one must be inspired.  What more inspirational topic than art? For thousands of years peoples have been moved to make art. Indeed, it is one of our spiritual needs; we are naturally driven to express ourselves through our minds and hands.  Thus, it is natural for our children to do art, and it is our task as Montessori teachers to provide them with opportunities to do so.

To do this, we don’t need to be artists, just inspired ourselves and know something about the essentials of art. In this Art Refresher Course some of the ideas that we will cover are:
·      the fundamental elements and principles of art
·      activities to experiment with the elements and principles
·      how to prepare an environment for art
·      an examination of the different media
·      bits of history throughout

Phyllis Pottish-Lewis is an AMI elementary Director of Training, AMI examiner, and AMI school consultant. With 34 years of teaching experience with children, 28 years of lecturing for AMI elementary courses, and two years of experience administering an AMI school, Ms. Pottish-Lewis is currently conducting a three-summer AMI elementary course at the Montessori Training Center of Minnesota, and continues to teach a 9-to-12 classroom at Marin Montessori School in California during the academic year. Ms. Pottish-Lewis received her AMI elementary diploma (1977) from the Washington Montessori Institute, where she trained with Margaret Stephenson. She also holds an AMI primary diploma (1971) from the Montessori Institute of Los Angeles, a Bachelor's Degree in Zoology from UCLA, and a Master's Degree in Education from Loyola College in Maryland.
